This week, I wanted to use the video assignment to introduce a project that means a lot to me: our podcast. It’s still in its early stages, but it already feels like one of the most honest things I’ve done creatively. The idea came out of a conversation with one of my best friends, where we realized we’ve both been shaped by growing up working-class in the South, living through trauma, and finding our way through it with humor, grief, rage, and a little bit of neurological impairment.
The podcast isn’t just us ranting (although there’s some of that). It’s about building a space where people who’ve been overlooked – queer folks, poor folks, neurodivergent people, people who’ve been through it – can see themselves reflected. We talk about everything from growing up around addiction and austerity to navigating college as nontraditional students, and how we stay grounded in organizing and community care. It’s political, but also personal. We want it to be messy, real, and maybe even healing.
I used this video assignment as a chance to reflect on why this podcast matters, and what we hope to build through it. If you’ve ever felt like the world wasn’t made for people like you, but you’re still here (still loud, still dreaming) you’ll probably get it.
